how it works
01
Connect
Pick a nickname. Your group already set up the “wire” — app or browser, your organizer said which.
02
Post
Say what you can give or what you need. Only people in your group’s network see it.
03
Browse
Scroll the board. Tap filters to narrow by offer, need, or urgent.
04

Help — simple steps

Doorstep is a small neighborhood help board. You and your group are on the same network — not the whole internet.

Start here (4 steps)

  1. Tap Board at the top.
  2. Tap Connect as me (or what your organizer told you). Type a nickname others will see.
  3. Write a post or read what’s on the board.
  4. If someone helps you, open the chat, then mark done and say thanks if you want.

If it’s stuck or says “not connected”

  • Tap Retry on the Board page (Step 1).
  • Check Wi‑Fi. Wait a few seconds — posts can be slow to show up.
  • See a yellow bar? Read it — it usually says Board & Retry.
  • Still broken? Ask your organizer — they fix the server side.

What others see

Your nickname and posts go to people in your group’s network. There is no big-company “for you” feed. If you use the website, your organizer may give you a link and a short code to paste — only if they said so.

Safety

Urgent in the app is not 911. Real emergency → call your local emergency number. Meet strangers in safe, public places when you can. Problems in the group → talk to your organizer.

For people running the tech

Downloads — files to install the app. Host setup — how to put this site online. Code — source. Holochain — what powers the mesh.

Doorstep

Helping people near you. Your data stays with you and neighbors — not a corporation.

STEP 1
Connect
Hook up once. Desktop app? Usually just nickname + Connect. Website only? Your organizer gives the rest (or use Try shared demo to practice).
not connected

Try shared demo = practice board (everyone shares one test account if your host turned it on). Connect as me = real you — desktop app, or paste what your organizer sent only if they said to.

Same you on another PC: save a pack file (buttons below) or keep the codes somewhere safe — that’s your “login.” Anyone with the file can pretend to be you.

New? Missing code → ask your organizer, or Try shared demo. After Connect works, the ID boxes fill in by themselves. Home still has a fake board to click around.

Disconnected? Internet blip or nap mode — tap Retry here or Board & Retry on the yellow bar. Nickname usually stays.

⚠ Mark as urgent / crisis — neighbors see this first

Privacy: Your post only goes to people you’re linked with. It’s stamped with your ID so others can’t fake being you.

STEP 3
Neighborhood board
Posts from people you’re connected to. The colored strip shows how busy a thread is.

What happens after you connect
📡
Your post spreads
After you connect, your post reaches neighbors you’re linked with — no one big server owns it.
🤝
Someone accepts
They tap to help. You both get a chat thread.
Done & thank-you
Either person can mark it finished. You can write a short thank-you — not likes or stars.

Humans in charge
